All-Inclusive, Mayan-style beachfront inside a mega-resort – Located along the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, these 2 hotels are part of the Barceló Mayan Riviera resort complex, and are a popular destination for families and couples. The sprawling property is secluded by more than 120 acres of tropical vegetation and fronted by more than a mile of palm-dotted white sand. The clear blue Caribbean waters are kept calm under the shelter of a protected coral reef that also makes for excellent snorkeling.
Accommodations: Guest rooms and suites are housed in low-rise buildings of Mayan and contemporary Mexican-style architecture. All rooms are equipped with queen-sized beds, air-conditioning, satellite TV, telephone, in-room safe, mini-fridge (stocked daily), hairdryer, and iron/ironing board. Every room features a balcony or a ground floor patio. Extra beds and adjoining rooms are available on request. Junior Suites include a sitting area, while Master Suites have 1 or 2 bedrooms, and living rooms.
Dining & Entertainment: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served at the 2 buffets. There are 2 dinner-only a la carte restaurants, El Agave offers traditional Mexican fare, while Don Quijote, serves Spanish cuisine. Both require reservations and enforce a dress code. Grilled specialties at Rancho Grande and Captain Morgen's make for an excellent lunch, snack, of informal meals. Drinks are poured at 6 bars, including 2 poolside spots that feature swim-up bars. Nightly shows are performed in The Kukulcan Theater, the largest of any resort in Mexico, with 1,200 seats. Drinks, a DJ, and dancing in the disco set up a lively social scene.
Recreation: The beach is arguably the best on the Riviera, and chaise lounges are plentiful. Volleyball, 3 lighted tennis courts, basketball, and archery are among the land-based athletics. Water sports include waterskiing, kayaking, water polo, and windsurfing. Giant outdoor chess, billiards, mini-golf, and table tennis provide more leisurely options. A 4-hole pitch and putt is on-site, and a 9-hole golf course is only a mile away.
